English Abstracts mup 4|2022 | 189 ■ Animal welfare in equestrian sports - An empirical analysis from the perspective of society and equestrians The discussion about animal welfare in equestrian sports has increased in recent years. Since the vast majority agrees that the use of animals is only allowed if the welfare of the animals can be guaranteed, the question arises whether this is given in equestrian sports. The results of this study show that the guarantee of animal welfare tends to be ranked in the middle range, with non-riders rating it most negatively (µ=3.00) and competition riders rating it most positively (µ=3.45). Both the non-riding community and recreational riders also mostly agree that recreational sport is more horse-friendly. Thus, competitive riding in particular is threatened by a decrease in social acceptance. However, a clear demand for a prohibition of equestrian sports has not emerged so far. Current social structures expect an increasingly flexible, but always emotionally competent person. In this article, possible specific influences of equine-assisted interventions on the development and promotion of those emotional competencies are described. Theory-based findings are supported by a questionnaire survey. This involves self-reporting by children and youth from 6 to 15 years who describe the influence of equine-assisted interventions on their own emotional competence.
